About the module

This module examines the legal frameworks and regulations surrounding artificial intelligence (AI), emphasizing ethical and responsible AI development and deployment. Participants will explore key legal concepts such as data privacy, intellectual property, liability, and compliance with emerging AI regulations, particularly within the context of Quebec and Canadian law, as well as an overview of the International legal landscape.

Xavier Dionne

Xavier Dionne is Legal Counsel at Mila. There, he handles the legal aspects of collaborations with industrial partners as part of Mila's Partnership Program, including applied research projects with partners, and initiatives within Mila’s socially driven AI for Humanity program.

Thomas Charest

Thomas occupies a Research Security Analyst position at Mila. In this capacity, he develops and implements Mila’s research security program, working to secure the institute’s critical assets and innovation ecosystem. Thomas leverages an academic and professional background in geopolitics, he holds a Master’s in Intelligence and International Security from King’s College London. 

Tom Lebrun

Tom Lebrun, Ph.D., is an expert in artificial intelligence policy, law, and regulation, and serves as a manager at the Standards Council of Canada, where he supports international coordination on AI governance and standards. His work focuses on aligning governmental, industrial, and international stakeholders to advance coherent and interoperable AI governance frameworks. He has over a decade of experience in AI, data, and privacy policy, teaches AI governance and regulation at Université Laval. He holds a Ph.D. (summa cum laude) on AI generated texts, as well as an LL.B. and an LL.M. in digital law from the Sorbonne Law School.
